Inadequate screening of nuclear workers

The NRC is still deciding whether to give the plant final approval.

NRC to begin inspection at Ga. nuclear work site – BusinessWeek, 5 Aug 2010, Federal regulators will start an inspection after workers were improperly screened at the construction site of a proposed nuclear power plant in eastern Georgia.

Nuclear Regulatory Commission spokesman Joey Ledford says a team of agency inspectors on Monday will start examining recent lapses at Plant Vogtle near Waynesboro.

The Southern Co. and its construction contractor, The Shaw Group, voluntarily halted work to backfill the foundation of two future reactors last month because workers were not given a written questionnaire asking about drug and alcohol abuse.

Shaw later determined a supervisor for one of its subcontractors improperly filled out the forms for its employees.

The NRC is still deciding whether to give the plant final approval.
