AREVA’s “renewable energy” a front for nuclear reactor sales
renewable generation..…….“window dressing” to the nuclear reactor.”Their (Areva’s) core business is nuclear and it is going to remain nuclear going forward,”
Areva has big plans in U.S. New Brunswick Business Journal, Christine Dobby 8 July 2010, Last June, French nuclear company Areva announced plans to take part in an alliance to pursue the development of America’s first clean energy park – including a nuclear reactor – in Piketon, Ohio. Both American projects are in early stages, with construction still years away……Jacques Besnainou, CEO of Areva Inc. in the United States, said the California project would be an important step in the development of a fleet of the company’s so-called EPR reactors and the firm could also bring concentrated solar power generation to the table.
And just this April, Areva signed a memorandum of understanding with an energy group to work toward a similar project near Fresno, California.
…………….Toby Couture, an energy analyst with E3 Analytics in New Brunswick, is skeptical about Areva’s plans for renewable generation in this province, which he called “window dressing” to the nuclear reactor.”Their (Areva’s) core business is nuclear and it is going to remain nuclear going forward,” he said in an interview.”It’s this hub notion again where they would have the anchor, which would be the nuclear reactor, and other ancillary industries around that.”
Couture questioned whether Areva could find a market to sell the nuclear power generated at the proposed facility.
“There are over 30 states in the U.S. that have targets for a minimum percentage of renewable power – so there’s a market for that. I’m not so sure there’s a market for nuclear power though and the market realities suggest there isn’t,” he said.
