Swedish police arrest 50 activists after Greenpeace protest at nuclear plant, Google hosted news, , By Malin Rising (CP) – 15 June 2010, STOCKHOLM — Swedish police on Monday arrested some 50 Greenpeace activists after they broke into a nuclear power plant site to protest the country’s use of atomic energy, officials said.The protesters climbed a fence of the Forsmark power plant and were detained on suspicion of trespassing and breaking safety regulations, police spokesman Christer Nordstrom said.Greenpeace spokesman Patrik Eriksson said activists from Germany, Poland and Nordic countries were demonstrating against government plans to allow the construction of new nuclear plants.Sweden’s Environment Minister Andreas Carlgren told local news agency TT that the Greenpeace action had exposed serious flaws in the safety at the Forsmark plant…..
n a 1980 referendum, Swedes decided to phase out the use of nuclear energy. But the current centre-right government in March proposed that existing nuclear plants should be replaced by new atomic reactors.On Thursday, lawmakers were expected to vote on the government proposal that requires parliamentary approval.
