High uranium levels in mentally retarded children
Uranium levels 62 times higher than normal – Chandigarh – City – The Times of India, Balwant Garg, TNN, Jun 14, 2010, BATHINDA: The report from Germany that revealed uranium presence in hair samples of mentally-retarded kids was made public by Dr Carin Smit at the Baba Farid Centre for Special Children on Sunday.
The reports reveals that 87% of children below 12 years and 82% beyond that age have uranium levels high enough to cause diseases, said Dr Amar Singh Azad, a paediatrician with the special kids’ centre. Pointing out levels of tin, lead, aluminium, manganese and iron in the specimens, centre incharge Dr Pritpal Singh added, “We had suspected the presence of heavy metals even before samples were sent for testing but had never imagined uranium.”
While radioactive count in water being consumed is five to eight times more than the permissible limit, the reports reveals uranium levels as 62, 44 and 27 times higher than normal in samples of three kids from Kotkapura and Fairdkot. …..
