California to demand recording of medical radiation doses
Calif. could require recording of radiation doses , San Francisco Chronicle May 28, 2010 California would create safeguards to protect patients from being exposed to excess radiation under a bill approved by the state Senate.Sen. Alex Padilla’s bill responds to reports last year that patients in two Los Angeles County hospitals were exposed to dangerous amounts of radiation during CT scans. High doses during computed tomography scans increase the risk of brain tumors, cataracts and skin cancer.
Padilla’s SB1237 requires medical facilities to record radiation doses in patients’ medical files and on the scanned image itself. Padilla, a Democrat from Los Angeles, says that will allow doctors to make sure their patients are not getting too much exposure, either cumulatively or in a single dose.
The bill passed Friday on a 24-5 vote and now heads to the Assembly.
