A somewhat limited study on uranium mining and groundwater

CU study looks at impact of proposed uranium mine on groundwater, The Coloradoan, BY BOBBY MAGILL • BobbyMagill@coloradoan.com • April 25, 2010 A University of Colorado study may soon shine more light on how Powertech’s proposed uranium mining northeast of Fort Collins might affect groundwater and the aquifers beneath the mine. CU master’s student Miori Yoshino is studying groundwater flow at the Powertech’s Centennial Project site, a project she expects to complete by the end of the year.
Groundwater flow is at the center of the controversy over the environmental and human impact of the proposed in situ leach uranium mine, which would use a baking soda-like solution to dissolve and then extract underlying uranium in northwestern Weld County. Some residents around the mine site are concerned in situ leaching could contaminate their domestic water wells.

Yoshino said her study will look at only how groundwater flows directly above the uranium ore body at the mine site, but not beyond it…..Yoshino is using data from five wells at the site. The data, she said, will be provided by Powertech. CU study looks at impact of proposed uranium mine on groundwater | coloradoan.com | The Coloradoan
