India’s Bill for nuclear insurance meeting political opposition
Nuclear liability bill hinges on Kolkata municipal elections! LiveMint.com by Liz Mathew on Tuesday, April 20, 2010 The fate of the proposed Civil Liability for Nuclear Damage Bill is closely linked to the municipal elections in Kolkata! Unbelievable? But not impossible…. at least according to some Congress leaders!
The nuclear liability bill will essentially introduce legislation essential for the operationalization of the Indo-US nuclear deal. The UPA government was forced to defer its introduction in the first part of the budget session due to protests from the opposition as well as Left parties. It is keen to bring in the new legislation as quickly as possible, but needs to ensure numbers, because Left parties have vowed to oppose even the introduction of the bill. It was this lack of numbers in favour of the legislation that forced the government to defer the introduction on 15 March, despite it being listed in the business of the house.
