U.S. Nuclear Posture Review strengthens North Korea’s defiance
[the US “Nuclear Posture Review”] left open all options, including a nuclear attack, on countries such as North Korea or Iran
N. Korea blasts new US nuclear policy Yemen news Agency ]TOKYO, April 9 (Saba) — North Korea criticized the new US nuclear policy, saying it showed Washington’s continued hostility toward Pyongyang, and vowed to strengthen its own atomic arsenal, Kuwait News Agency (KUNA) reported on Friday.”This proves that the present US policy towards the DPRK is nothing different from the hostile policy pursued by the Bush administration,” a spokesman for the North Korean Foreign Ministry said in a statement carried by the official Korean Central News Agency. DPRK stands for the North’s official name, the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea.”As long as the US nuclear threat persists, the DPRK will increase and update various type nuclear weapons as its deterrent in such a manner as it deems necessary in the days ahead,” the statement said….
It was the first time that the North has officially commented on the US “Nuclear Posture Review” issued Tuesday. In the new guideline, the administration of US President Barack Obama renounced the use of nuclear weapons against non-nuclear states that are in compliance with the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty. But it left open all options, including a nuclear attack, on countries such as North Korea or Iran that defy international nuclear nonproliferation obligations. Pyongyang quit the treaty in 2003 and has since staged two atomic weapons tests.
