Australia’s only pro nuclear political party withers and dies
Pro-nuclear party runs out of energy, The Canberra Times, BY PHILIP DORLING0, 7 Apr, 2010 Australia’s only strongly pro-nuclear power political party has exited the electoral stage with a whimper rather than a bang. The Australian Electoral Commission yesterday announced that it had accepted an application for voluntary party deregistration by Environmentalists for Nuclear Energy Australia.
In October last year the commission began a review of the party’s eligibility to remain on the Federal Register of Political Parties.Despite claims by the party that it had more than 600 members, the AEC found that membership testing results were insufficient to demonstrate that it contained the minimum of 500 members required to maintain its federal registration.
Last month the party applied for voluntary deregistration, which means that it cannot run candidates at the next federal election. It was previously known as Conservatives for Climate and Environment and described by Labor strategists as a ”Coalition front organisation”.
