Danger in providing nuclear technology to Pakistan
One cannot hand over nuclear power to a country so unpredictable.
Why Pakistan should not get a nuclear deal : Livemint.com Pradip Kumar Saha , March 24, 2010 “….Reports say the two countries [USA and Pakistan] could discuss a civil nuclear deal—nuclear power could help ease Pakistan’s energy woes at least. This has got India worried. There are several reasons why there should be no nuclear deal with Pakistan.
The Wall Street Journal cited US officials as saying that a civilian nuclear deal would be a tough-sell, given Pakistan’s history of nuclear weapons proliferation. Secondly, it will be dangerous to provide such technology to a country that is in the middle of a civil war with terrorists. Moreover, Pakistan has never allowed US intelligence officers to interview A.Q. Khan, the former head of Pakisatn’s nuclear programme who sold nuclear weapons-related technology to Iran, North Korea and Libya……
What’s more, can Pakistan pay for the nuclear technology it wants? Any company, if it plans on building reactors in Pakistan, will need to think twice whether it will be paid or not. Safety of its workers and the plant itself is another great cause for concern.Again, even if Pakistan manages to clinch any such deal—which looks highly unlikely—there is no guarantee that Gen. Ashfaq Kayani will not dethrone President Asif Ali Zardari in the years to come.
One cannot hand over nuclear power to a country so unpredictable.
