No answer received to Iran’s proposal for swapping uranium

‘Iran has received no response to its nuclear proposal so far’ Tehran Times Political Desk anuary 7, 2010 TEHRAN – So far Iran has not received any response to its proposal for swapping its low-enriched uranium with 20 percent nuclear fuel in Japan, Brazil, Turkey, or on the Iranian island of Kish, MP Hossein Ebrahimi said on Wednesday.

The Iranian foreign minister has said the country will produce 20 percent enriched nuclear fuel for the Tehran research reactor if the West refuses to provide the fuel by February.Iran dismissed an end-of-2009 deadline imposed by the West to accept a UN-drafted deal to swap most of its enriched uranium for nuclear fuel.

Instead, Tehran presented another proposal according to which the West should either sell the nuclear fuel to Iran or swap the nuclear fuel for Iran’s enriched uranium, to be delivered in smaller consignments instead of all at once as the UN plan calls for.“Of course, the IAEA has given a positive response to Iran’s request and referred it to the U.S., France and Russia for implementing,” Ebrahimi, a member of the Majlis National Security and Foreign Policy Committee, told the Mehr News Agency.
