Fire kills two at Indian nuclear centre
Two killed in fire at India nuclear research centre BBC News 30 Dec 09 A fire at an Indian nuclear research facility has killed two people….the blaze, which broke out in a laboratory, was brought under control within 45 minutes.Indian police officials told news agencies that the charred bodies of two research students were found on the third floor of the laboratory.
The centre has a number of nuclear research reactors and is one of India’s key research centres for both nuclear power and nuclear weapons.

French nuclear power giant AREVA is talking to a group of investors about putting one or two atomic power plants in California’s Central Valley.
Paris-based Areva said Tuesday it’s signed a letter of intent with Fresno Nuclear Eneegy Group LLC, which it calls “a group of investors,” about early work necessary to bring the company’s advanced EPR technology to California…………
Areva has been working on the EPR project in Finland for four years, a third reactor on an island at Olkiluoto, on the country’s southwestern coast. That 1,600 megawatt project was set to start generating power this year, but has been delayed.

Successful anti-uranium protest rubbished by mining interests

Canadian uranium news for December 2009 Idaho Samizdat nuke notes 29 Dec 09 ” ………….…protest by 23 area physicians who threatened to leave the area. They said a drilling exploration project being operated by Terra Ventures (CVE:TAS) at Lake Kachiwiss 13 km from the town of Sept-lles was a threat to drinking water supplies.
The site is 900 km northwest of Montreal.Marc Fafard, a spokesman for the uranium protest group, said his organization feels a national referendum on uranium mining is the only way to get attention to their issues. Getting one on the ballot he said means “the government will no longer be able to ignore us.”Fafard has been active for some time in his cause to stop uranium exploration in Quebec. Continue reading
