Nobody knows how to dispose of dead nuclear reactors
Decommissioning nuclear reactors Outside the box 28 Oct 09 In Russia, there are four nuclear reactors that exceeded their 30 years operation limit in the Baltic Region, these reactors are Chernobyl type reactors, and if there is an incident, the entire region may encounter irreversible environmental catastrophe.
There are no established decommissioning practices in the world, and only few nuclear power plants were safely cleaned up and radioactive spent fuel was stored on the site (Germany, US, and Latvia on the way).Russia and US have the oldest nuclear reactors that require clean up, there are significant environmental and security issues involved. Both governments ignore the problem,
Russia does not have funds allocated to clean up old nuclear sites. And with nuclear renaissance, the problem of spent fuel, radioactive sites and unsafe nuclear power plants only continues to grow.
