UK Defence Ministry opposing nuclear test veterans
Ministry of Defence bid to dodge nuclear test veterans trial MoD Oracle (UK) 18 Oct 09 Defence chiefs are appealing against a legal ruling in favour of Britain’s nuclear test veterans. They are trying to overturn a judgement in June allowing vets to sue the MoD for negligence.A thousand survivors of the blasts argued the Pacific tests’ fallout left them with cancers and rare disorders, and their children and grandchildren with birth defects.
The case was expected to lead to compensation of £100million for the 3,000 surviving vets. But this week the MoD lodged an appeal. They claim some veterans lied under oath and many scientists who ran the trials have died.Shirley Denson, 72, whose husband Eric committed suicide following years of crippling headaches after he was ordered to fly through a mushroom cloud at Christmas Island in 1958, said: “They think they can wait for us all to die – but we will never surrender.”
