Funding and planning problems hit Italy’s nuclear industry

Italy may have big nuclear ambitions, but funding and plannning problems have not been resolved  Utilty Week by: Simon Jones | 02 October 2009 Enel has set up a joint venture with EDF to deliver the first four of at least ten nuclear reactors in Italy, as promised by president Berlusconi. But where to site the reactors – and how to pay for them – has yet to be established..

Nuclear operators need access to huge volumes of water. The history of local bureaucratic delay and public hostility to regasification plant projects around Italy’s coast over the past decade is not encouraging………….

The Italian group is already mid-way through a disposal programme to rein in debt of more than €55 billion. The four SNI plants have been costed at €16 billion. Experience of the Olkiluoto-3 EPR plant in Finland, currently way over budget and behind schedule, suggests the final figure will be much higher…………….

siting and funding issues could still undo Italy’s nuclear renaissance.
