Plan for new, decentralised renewable energy
San Antonio Business Journal October 2, 2009, CDTS, San Antonio is developing sustainable-energy plan for future San Antonio Business Journal
The City of San Antonio and CPS Energy released a report Friday outlining a broad-based strategy aimed at developing sustainable energy in the Alamo City.
The report calls for the city and the utility to take steps to invest in new, decentralized forms of energy. This will mean more of an investment in renewable energy; the development of buildings that generate their own power; hydrogen storage of renewable energy; and smart grids and plug-in vehicles…………….
“We need to envision a future in which millions of individuals can collect and produce locally generated renewable energy in their homes, offices, factories and vehicles, store that energy in the form of hydrogen and share their energy with each other across a continent-wide intelligent intergrid,” says Jeremy Rifkin, president of the Foundation on Economic Trends in the United States,………………..
Distributed generation is a method of generating electricity at the site of where the power is needed rather than at a utility-owned power plant. An on-site power generation system may be a type of distributed generation. Solar-energy panels could also be a type of distributed generation.
CPS Energy’s Bartley says the utility is already working on equipping its entire service area with smart meters that will facilitate the flow of data from the customer to CPS Energy in support of a smart grid.
Smart grid technologies allow energy companies to better track energy consumption, allowing utilities to increase system reliability, allocate energy resources effectively and reduce overall system costs…………..
The full report is available here.
CPS Energy is a municipally owned gas and electric company.
