Anti-nuclear activists arrested

Anti-nuke activists arrested  Brattleboro reformer By BOB AUDETTE VERNON 30 Sept 09 — A group of women with a history of being arrested for protesting at Vermont Yankee nuclear power plant were again escorted by police from the site on Monday after walking past the security shack at the plant’s front gate and settling into lawn chairs on the access drive to the reactor site. After being dropped off at the security gate, the four women, carrying signs with slogans such as “Shut it down” and “Nuclear waste kills the Earth,” walked past the plant’s exterior gate and sat down on the far side of a second security gate, which was closed once they passed it.The women were cited for unlawful trespass…………………

In a document handed out to the media prior to their walking past the security post, the women stated they were concerned about the safety of Vermont Yankee.

“There is no foolproof nuclear power plant,” they wrote. “Vermont Yankee is a good example of the dangers posed by nuclear power.”

The women cited several problems with the plant including fires, cooling tower failures, deferred maintenance, lack of money for the eventual decommissioning of the plant, “fudging the numbers regarding radiation releases,” and “workers who come to work intoxicated or on drugs.”

Yankee is dangerous to the environment, they wrote, for those in proximity to it and “dangerous for all future generations who have to breathe the radioactive air, eat food contaminated by radiation in farms surrounding this site, dangerous for the genes of children yet unborn for countless generations to come.”
