Overwhelming public opposition to nuclear power in Saskatchewan
Many Saskatchewan residents fear nuclear power, so government promises to move cautiously: report
By Angela Hall, Leader-PostSeptember 15, 2009
REGINA —The Saskatchewan Party government should develop a public report outlining all power generation options and their costs, and review research on the health impacts of nuclear power, recommends a report released today….
Those public consultations recorded an “overwhelming response” against nuclear power, and concern about health, safety and environmental impacts and financial costs, according to the report by Perrins, which summarized more than 2,200 written or verbal responses.
Many people also expressed reservations about the UDP report itself, believing the work of the panel struck by government to examine the province’s nuclear options was limited in scope…………
More than 1,400 responses (the report points out some of the same people or organizations responded more than once) dealt with nuclear power, with 84 per cent against such electrical generation in the province. About 14 per cent of those responses were in favour and two per cent didn’t state their preference………
Other recommendations in the report include:………….- that First Nations and Metis be consulted separately on any aspect of further developing uranium
