Germany: Nuclear power an issue pre-election
Merkel, Steinmeier Clash on Jobs, Taxes in TV Debate
and Foreign MinisterBy Tony Czuczka and Brian Parkin Sept. 13 (Bloomberg) — Chancellor Angela MerkelFrank-Walter Steinmeier clashed on jobs, taxes and who can best steer Germany’s economy out of the crisis during their only television debate before Sept. 27 elections………………….
On nuclear power, he attacked Merkel’s policy of overturning a moratorium on nuclear power and extending the lifespan of plants beyond their planned closure by around 2021.
‘Politically Wrong’
“Getting back into nuclear technology is irresponsible and politically wrong,” Steinmeier said. “The vast majority rejects nuclear technology for what I believe are the right reasons.”
