Hudson River Lovers Fight to Shutter Aging Nuclear Power Plant
Hudson River Lovers Fight to Shutter Aging Nuclear Power Plant by Mike Di Paola an. 9 (Bloomberg) — The Indian Point nuclear power plant in Buchanan, New York is showing its age. Patches of rust scar its gray concrete domes, and a derelict smokestack looms over the decades-old facility, which still commands a choice view of the Hudson River.
“There are very toxic, highly irradiated tanks partially buried on site,” says attorney Phillip Musegaas, who serves as Hudson River Program Director for Riverkeeper, the nonprofit guardian of the Hudson River and protector of 2,000 square miles of watershed that feed New York City’s water supply.
Plant owner Entergy Corp. is hoping to renew licenses for the two remaining reactor units here, which are set to expire by 2015. There has always been some opposition to Indian Point. Now, the forces aligned against it — from New York’s Department of Environmental Conservation to State Attorney General Andrew Cuomo — might be too formidable to withstand
Musegaas began preparing legal challenges to the license renewals in 2006, not long after it was revealed that radioactive contaminants strontium-90 and tritium were leaking into the Hudson from those very tanks. The leak was traced back to reactor Unit 1, which had been shut down in the 1970s. In November, Entergy said it had cleaned up the mess.
“We think these contaminants are getting into the soil and vegetation,” says Musegaas, “and are bio-accumulating in fish,” meaning that these noxious substances collect and concentrate as they travel up the food chain.

Then there’s the plant’s cooling system, which uses river water as a coolant — to the peril of millions of fish, fish eggs and larvae that get sucked into the system.
“They use 2.2 billion gallons of water a day,” says Riverkeeper’s boat captain John Lipscomb. “All the life in that water gets cooked. It’s a massive impact.”

Entergy suspends two nuclear plant applications
Entergy suspends two nuclear plant applications
By Eileen O’Grady
HOUSTON, Jan 9 (Reuters) – Entergy Corp’s (ETR.N) nuclear unit said on Friday it will suspend activity on two applications to build new nuclear reactors, one in Mississippi and one in Louisiana.
In a release, New Orleans-based Entergy said it asked the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission to halt review of its applications to build two reactors based on GE Hitachi’s (6501.T) Economic Simplified Boiling Water Reactor (ESBWR) design, citing “unsuccessful attempts” to come to terms with GE Hitachi.

Toward a nuclear-free world: a German view
Toward a nuclear-free world: a German view –By Helmut Schmidt, Richard von Weizsäcker, Egon Bahr and Hans-Dietrich Genscher. 9 Jan 09 “………………
We unreservedly support the call by Messrs. Kissinger, Schultz, Perry and Nunn for a turnaround on nuclear policy, and not only in their country. This applies in particular to the following proposals:
– The vision of a world free of the nuclear threat, as developed by Ronald Reagan and Mikhail Gorbachev in Reykjavik, must be rekindled.
– Negotiations aimed at drastically reducing the number of nuclear weapons must begin, initially between the United States and Russia, the countries with the largest number of warheads, in order to win over the other countries possessing such weapons.
– The Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT) must be greatly reinforced.
– America should ratify the Comprehensive Nuclear Test-Ban Treaty.
– All short-range nuclear weapons must be destroyed.
From Germany’s point of view it must be added:
-The Strategic Arms Reduction Treaty (START) expires this year. Its extension is the most urgent item on the agenda for Washington and Moscow.
– It will be vital to the credibility of the 2010 NPT Review Conference that nuclear-weapon states finally keep their promise under the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty to reduce their nuclear arsenals.
– The Anti-Ballistic Missile (ABM) Treaty must be restored. Outer space may only be used for peaceful purposes…………………………………Germany, which has renounced the use of nuclear, biological and chemical weapons, has every reason to call on the nuclear-weapon states not to use nuclear weapons against countries not possessing such arms. We are also of the opinion that all remaining U.S. nuclear warheads should be withdrawn from German territory.

– 9 Jan agoWASHINGTON (AP) — William Perry, who headed the Pentagon during a 1994 nuclear standoff with North Korea, predicted on Thursday that President-elect Barack Obama will soon face a nuclear crisis with Iran.Iran is “moving inexorably toward becoming a nuclear power,” with ominous implications for the Middle East, Perry said.”It seems clear that Israel will not sit by idle while Iran takes the final steps toward becoming a nuclear power,”

Nuclear Plant Powers Way Down After Water Leak Found
Michael Kanellos Nuclear Plant Powers Way Down After Water Leak Found
January 8, 2009 at 5:19 PMThe Vermont Yankee nuclear power plant has cut power production by 60 percent after a leak in the pipe that provides water to the steam generator was discovered, according to the AP.The leak is dripping about 60 drops a minute and the water is mildly radioactive. On Wednesday, the Vermont Yankee (which is my favorite nuclear power plant name) had a leak in the gasket.Better clean it up, lads. The nuclear industry is promoting itself as a clean and economical and large-scale alternative to coal and natural gas. It’s also not intermittent like solar or wind, and a few plants can provide large amounts of baseload power, say proponents………………
Debates rage over whether nuclear will be economical or not. See Joe Romm’s take on a new report that says new nuclear will cost 15 cents or more a kilowatt hour.
But — ugh — safety and leaks are tougher to argue over. If the safety and maintenance record gets murky, nuclear advocates are going to have a tough time mustering support.

Forget nuclear power, let’s go solar
Forget nuclear power, let’s go solar tampabay.com J
Linda Lowe, Brandon
anuary 10, 2009 Meeting Florida’s energy needs – “………………..there are alternatives to building a new nuclear plant. Nuclear is an overpriced, outmoded option to produce electricity. Yes, the carbon emissions, the primary cause of global warming, are minimized, but the costs of construction and disposal of nuclear waste are too great……………….Through the use of solar feed-in tariffs, businesses and residential customers are actually paid a premium for the excess electricity they produce and sell back to the utility. In this way, the high price of solar for these early adopters is mitigated and banks are more willing to finance the investment.
The cost to do this is spread among all customers: $2.50 per customer per month in Germany, and about 40 cents per customer per month in Gainesville. That sure beats the surcharge of $11.42 per 1,000 kilowatt hours Progress Energy is going to be charging in advance for building a nuclear plant.
Solar power would provide jobs and eliminate the conundrum of what to do with the nuclear waste…………………It’s time to take the new nuclear plant off the table and study the economic viability of solar power with feed-in tariffs.
