23 September 2008 – “…………………….After months of holding firm, last week’s decline in the uranium spot price has been followed with another decline this week. Four transactions in the spot uranium market this week sees the consultant’s weekly spot price indicator down US$3.00 to $60.00 per pound…………………………..TradeTech advises broader market pressure this week was a main contributor to price weakness, reporting that one distressed seller completed a sale for about 100 thousand pounds U3O8 (uranium oxide) at a price several dollars below published prices.

“Friendly Fire” to be shown at school
Sauk Centre Herald  23 Sept 08
The film depicts the effects of Gulf War Syndrome and depleted uranium’s role in long-term health problems for soldiers, their newborns and Iraqi civilians.

Friendly Fire, a documentary by Dr. Gary Null, has received critical acclaim for not only bringing to light the long-term physical effects the Persian Gulf War and the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, but also the military and government’s attempt to cover it up.

The film will be shown free of charge this Sunday night at 7 p.m. at the Sauk Centre High School Auditorium. The event is sponsored by the Veterans Village of Minnesota………………….State rep. Bud Heidgerken (R-Freeport) recently cosponsored a bill that has earmarked $500,000 a year for two years for the testing and treatment of depleted uranium.

Green with envy: Waste-disposal problem cannot simply be buried thepost September 22, 2008 Cathy Wilson
When it comes to waste, the United States has a history of literally burying its problems — a practice that is a shortcut rather than a solution………………………..

The process of nuclear fission results in the creation of low-level and high-level radioactive waste. Equipment or clothing that has been contaminated is classified as low-level, while used nuclear reactor fuel is labeled as high-level.

Low-level waste takes hundreds of years to reach safe levels of radiation, while high-level radioactive waste won’t reach safe levels for tens of thousands of years. After being monitored and cooled for several years, it is transported and placed in concrete structures.

Nuclear waste disposal is a concrete (no pun intended) and current topic that needs to be discussed by the people who are so adamant about its promise. Some propose burying the radioactive waste deep underground in places like Yucca Mountain in Nevada, but the problem is that Nevada residents aren’t clamoring to have such waste in their backyards or seeping into their groundwater……………………………….Renewable energy is within reach, composting already exists and simply reducing waste and energy use individually doesn’t hurt either. It’s irresponsible to rely on burying our problems today knowing that future generations will be haunted by them and forced to fix them tomorrow.

THE Australian Greens have called for Australia’s only nuclear reactor to be closed down, following reports a chronic water seepage problem has yet to be fixed.

The reactor, commissioned in 2006, is based at Lucas Heights south of Sydney and is managed by the Australian Nuclear Science and Technology Organisation (ANSTO).

The facility has been out of operation for 11 of the past 14 months,…………….The water seepage was first identified in December 2006 and attempts have been made to address the problem during an extended shutdown.

The reactor is used to make nuclear medicines, neutrons for scientific research and irradiation services.

It does not generate electricity.

“We think the safest solution for this reactor is for it to be shut down and for the waste to be contained properly,” Greens senator Scott Ludlam said today.

Importing nuclear products from South Africa and Canada could continue, he said.

“You’d be surprised how little that reactor was used for.”

Local residents had fought against the construction of the reactor, and there were “always dangers” with nuclear technology.

CHRONIC water seepage at Australia’s only nuclear reactor has sparked plans to build a plant to treat the water in a sign the problem might never be fixed.

The problem lies within the new Argentinian-built OPAL nuclear reactor used not to produce power, but rather nuclear medicines, neutrons for scientific research and irradiation services.
