The sun sets on Japan’s nuclear age, Irish Tims, 26 May 11, DAVID McNEILL, NUCLEAR FALLOUT: The meltdown at the Fukushima nuclear plant has grave implications for Japan’s planned atomic energy expansion, and also its long-term economic growth
IN A CITY where mass demonstrations are rare and generally tame, Tokyo has seen at least four in the past month, all against nuclear power. Thousands of people have marched past the headquarters of Tokyo Electric Power (Tepco) shouting slogans at the executives they hold responsible for the world’s worst atomic crisis since Chernobyl. Unprecedented criticism of Tokyo Electric Power Company
The IAEA’s 10-day visit, which began on Monday, coincides with mounting criticism of the operator of the Fukushima Daiichi plant, as it becomes clear that the damage caused by the March 11earthquake and tsunami was far worse than initially thought. Its findings could have a significant impact on public attitudes toward both the plant’s operator and the Japanese government, and are certain to attract the interest of other countries with nuclear power plants.

AREVA neglecting France’s old radioactive uranium mining sites
Today, the site is the responsibility of Areva, a majority state-owned French multinational that builds nuclear power stations and manages uranium mines around the world……
France’s respected Independent Research and Information Commission on Radioactivity (CRIIRAD). is similarly critical of the situation. “These exposures are totally unjustified and levels should be reduced by properly redeveloping the site and removing radioactive material,”
Radiation fears surround France’s old uranium mines, Google News, By Simon Coss (AFP) 27 May 11, ROSGLAS, France — It looks like any other another leafy woodland path in Brittany, but campaigners say ramblers on this particular trail may face levels of radiation at least 10 times higher than normal. Nuclear power for Canada? not quite a dead parrot
As they say in the old Monty Python skit, “this parrot is not dead.” ….Will we continue to blindly follow the nuclear cult leaders or do what the smart money is doing in Switzerland and pursue a clean energy future “without any hesitance and a strict no, to the nuclear possibility?”
Ontario’s Nuclear Ostriches, Bruce Cox: 27 May 11 On Wednesday May 25 at 3:30 in the afternoon the Swiss government pulled the plug on their nuclear future. They will shelve plans for three new reactors, phase out their aging reactors, and focus their efforts on energy efficiency and clean renewable energy production. The nuclear industry has spent the last handful of years declaring a global “nuclear renaissance” in the face of a growing climate change crisis with the hopes of spawning more nuclear sales and government subsidies. Japan’s nuclear lobby still promoting nuclear power
The sun sets on Japan’s nuclear age, The Irish Times -DAVID McNEILL, May 27, 2011 “……..Japan’s largest business lobby, the Keidanren, has made its position very clear. Chairman Hiromasa Yonekura this month demanded that Kan rescind his decision on Hamaoka, which he called “extralegal” and a “political performance”. With Japanese businesses already struggling to compete with mighty China, the nation cannot afford to ditch nuclear power, he warned. For that reason, many analysts say that Kan’s more recent pronouncements are rhetoric designed to appease angry voters. Nuclear plant near Joplin vulenerable to tornadoes
‘Tornado Alley’ reactor not fully twister-proof, Google News, (AP) 27 May 11, WASHINGTON (AP) — The closest nuclear power plant to tornado-ravaged Joplin, Mo., was singled out weeks before the storm for being vulnerable to twisters.Inspections triggered by Japan’s nuclear crisis found that some emergency equipment and storage sites at the Wolf Creek nuclear plant in southeastern Kansas might not survive a tornado.
Specifically, plant operators and federal inspectors said Wolf Creek did not secure equipment and vehicles needed to fight fires, retrieve fuel for emergency generators and resupply water to keep nuclear fuel cool as it’s being moved.
Despite these findings, the Nuclear Regulatory Commission concluded that the plant met requirements put in place after the Sept. 11 attacks that are designed to keep the nuclear fuel cool and containment structures intact during an emergency….. Switzerland’s decision another blow to the nuclear industry
In Switzerland’s Decision to Phase Out Nuclear Power, a Glimpse of the Future? Forbes, by Parmy OlsonMay. 25 2011 The political fallout from Japan’s nuclear crisis has reached Switzerland. On Sunday, 20,000 people participated in the country’s largest anti-nuclear demonstration in a generation. Today, the Swiss cabinet decided to phase out nuclear power through attrition over the next few decades. “The existing reactors will operate for as long as they’re safe,” Swiss Energy Minister Doris Leuthard said, but no new nuclear plants will be built. The decision was seen as a compromise between those who support a quick halt to nuclear power generation and others who want to build more plants…….The Swiss phase out raises more doubts about the future of the nuclear power industryIn Switzerland’s Decision to Phase Out Nuclear Power, a Glimpse of the Future? – Osha Gray Davidson – Edison 2.0 – Forbes
At long last, cleanup begins on uranium contaminated Navajo land
…The Navajo have borne a deeply unfair burden. Four million tons of uranium have been pulled from beneath their land in Utah, Arizona and New Mexico, mostly for use in nuclear weapons. Federal compensation for miners can’t make up for the disease they now suffer.
The Environmental Protection Agency is finally starting to haul away the toxic remnants of decades of uranium mining in Utah’s Monument Valley. “I hear the trucks,” resident Elsie Mae Begay told the Salt Lake Tribune. “When they start cleaning up, it’s OK for us.” Continue reading
