Deceptive advertising from Entergy, about Indian Point nuclear power plant

Entergy forgot to mention that Indian Point has radioactive air and water emissions and leaks….

residents of three counties adjacent to Indian Point have thyroid cancer rates among the highest in the United States.

Indian Point Nuclear power Plant raises concerns, Times Union.com, Tom Ellis,  September 27, 2011 A full-page ad in the Aug. 18 Times Union touted the benefits of Indian Point, a 49-year-old, three-unit nuclear power station where two 1970s-vintage reactors still operate. The plant is 25 miles north of the Bronx and 35 miles from midtown Manhattan. The ad was paid for by Entergy, owner of Indian Point.

The ad noted that Indian Point has “virtually no greenhouse gas emissions.” As is often the case with Entergy, this statement seems designed to be deceptive. Indian Point uses uranium nuclear fuel. Mining, milling and enriching uranium, and fabricating it into nuclear fuel, all require the use of fossil fuels, as did constructing the reactors. Nuclear materials are transported long distances, again using fossil fuels.

Entergy also owns the Vermont Yankee station near Brattleboro, Vt. Early last year, Entergy was caught making highly inaccurate statements to Vermont state officials. Entergy said there are no underground pipes beneath Vermont Yankee. Not true. In fact, the pipes beneath the nuclear station have leaked radioactive tritium, a carcinogen, into the Connecticut River.

This incorrect statement infuriated Vermonters and has contributed considerably to their desire to close the reactor when its license (recently illegally extended by the federal Nuclear Regulatory Commission) expires in March. The Times Union ran an editorial on Feb. 5, 2010, about Entergy’s deception.

In its August ad, Entergy forgot to mention that Indian Point has radioactive air and water emissions and leaks.

Joseph Mangano has documented in the International Journal of Health Services that residents of three counties adjacent to Indian Point have thyroid cancer rates among the highest in the United States. The state Department of Environmental Conservation insists that Indian Point operations kill billions of Hudson River fish each year.
