Christian and Buddhist leaders speak against nuclear weapons
Protesting the bomb: Religious groups to remember Hiroshima – South Florida Sun-Sentinel.com, 30 July 2010, “………..Aug. 6 marks the 65th anniversary of the atomic bombing of Hiroshima, Japan, followed by the bombing of Nagasaki three days later. The 200,000-plus deaths from those attacks, and the perceived need to reduce the number of such weapons, is the focus of an alliance of religious and secular groups.
In South Florida, ground zero will be St. Maurice Catholic Church in Dania Beach. Speakers will include not only Catholic but Quaker, Buddhist and Unitarian Universalist leaders. Also there will be leaders of Pax Christi, the Catholic peace movement, from Broward and Palm Beach counties.
“Our religious leaders, from pope to bishops, are all in favor of abolishing nuclear weapons,” says the Rev. Roger Holoubek, pastor of the host church. “Pope John Paul II said that war is always a defeat for humanity. And nuclear weapons are about war on a big scale.”
At the service, members of the Florida branch of Soka Gakkai will perform a Buddhist ceremony. Other performers will include drumming by Fushu Daiko, and The Peace Seekers, singing Woody Guthrie‘s “Song on Peace.”
Leaders of the Interfaith Council of Broward County will offer a petition against nuclear weapons for attendees to sign. Pax Christi will show its documentary “Hiroshima: Repentance and Renewal.”Protesting the bomb: Religious groups to remember Hiroshima – South Florida Sun-Sentinel.com
