U.N. – 189 countries want Israel to sign Nuclear Non Proliferation Treaty
Israel not yielding to NPT pressure - PALESTINE NOTE, 30 May Washington - 189 countries have agreed to a declaration that calls for Israel to sign the nuclear Non-proliferation Treaty (NPT) and the organization of a 2012 Middle East nuclear conference, Al-Jazeera English reported Sunday. Israel, however, will not be moved.
May has marked a month-long conference on nuclear threats and updating the NPT, and Israel’s lack of nuclear transparency has garnered considerable negative attention. Israel’s nuclear program is a badly-kept secret akin to programs in India and Pakistan.
But in an effort to boost regional nuclear safety in the Middle East, pressure has mounted to get Israel to sign the NPT and open its nuclear program. The UN delegates wrapped up the conference with a declaration that “urges Israel to join the treaty and subject its nuclear facilities to oversight by the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA),” AJE said. The resolution calls for a meeting of Middle East states in 2012, which will focus on creating a region free of nuclear, biological and chemical weapons….
….Israel said it refuses to take part in the Friday resolution, saying the Non-proliferation Treaty is “deeply flawed” and “hypocritical,” BBC reported Saturday.
Israeli PM Benjamin Netanyahu told AFP news agency: “[The NPT] ignores the realities of the Middle East and the real threats facing the region and the entire world… [And] given the distorted nature of this resolution, Israel will not be able to take part in its implementation.”Israel not yielding to NPT pressure – Top News
