SAN FRANCISCO, Dec. 30 (UPI)A French engineering firm has signed a deal with California investors to build one or two nuclear power plants, a project banned under current California law.

John Hutson, president of Fresno Nuclear Energy Group, said the investors plan to apply for a permit from the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission for a plant in the Central Valley, the San Francisco Chronicle reported. He said the group believes California will drop its ban on construction of new nuclear power plants until a federal nuclear waste repository is up and running.
