Native American tribe opposes nuclear plant expansion
Minn. tribe rallies against nuke plant’s expansion
KARE, by John Croman 28 Nov 09 WELCH, Minn. — Members of a Minnesota Native American community with a nuclear power plant as its neighbor rallied Friday to voice opposition to a utility’s expansion plans there. The event, at Prairie Island Indian Community, is the latest step tribal members have taken to sound off against Xcel Energy’s plans to expland the Red Wing plant, and add to its on-site radioactive waste storage. It was built on part of the ancient tribal grounds of the Mdewakanton Dakota, along the Mississippi River north of Red Wing………..
……..When Xcel asked to increase on-site waste storage to 24 casks in 2003, Prairie Island signed an agreement okaying the casks until 2013. The tribe is compensated financially by Excel, but tribal elders say they entered that pact with the understanding it would be only temporary.
