Increasing nuclear waste troubling Russian authorities
Russian nuclear regulator worried about increasing atomic waste Earth Times 16 Nov 2009 Moscow – Russia is getting buried in nuclear waste – about 550 million tons – and needs to do something about it, the Interfax news agency Monday quoted the country’s nuclear regulator, Rosatom, as saying. Resolving the problem will take decades, said Rosatom deputy head Tatyana Yelfimova while presenting proposed legislation on the matter to the energy committee of Russia’s parliament.
Environmentalists have routinely decried catastrophic storage standards in Russia, including one incidence where nuclear waste from Germany was discovered in rusting containers left outside in Siberia.
